Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Concentration

Fill a growing need for accessible mental health services through UL Lafayette’s online psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioner concentration. 

Upon completion, this 48-credit-hour program, prepares you to assess, diagnose, and develop treatment plans for individuals across the lifespan. Apply your knowledge of evidence-based interventions in hospitals, clinics, and specialized care facilities. 

Once you successfully complete the MSN curriculum for this concentration, you’ll meet the educational requirements to sit for the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner national certification examination, and to apply for an advanced practice license to begin your career as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.

Curriculum 

To earn your Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner you must adhere to the following:

  • 48 credit hours: Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner concentration.
  • Attain a minimum of 600 precepted, direct patient care clinical hours in Louisiana.
  • Satisfactorily complete a Focused Scholarly Project.
  • Earn no less than a "B" grade in all coursework.
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0

Note: Students who earn less than a "B" grade in a course will be required to repeat that course. A course may be repeated only once. Courses with a grade of "C" may not be applied toward the degree requirements.

NURS 505 - Applied Statistics for the Health Sciences Credit Hours: 3

NURS 517 - Pharmacotherapeutics for Advanced Practice Nursing Credit Hours: 3

NURS 502 - Generating Evidence for Nursing Practice Credit Hours: 3

NURS 507 - Health Assessment and Diagnostic Reasoning for Advanced Practice Credit Hours: 3

NURS 508 - Diagnostic Considerations and Psychopharmacology for Psychiatric Disorders. Credit Hours: 3 (Spring Only)

* All MSN students must complete either NURS 599 - Thesis Research and Thesis OR NURS 595 - Focused Scholarly Project. Students who elect to complete a thesis must earn 6 hours of NURS 599 applicable to the total credit hours required. Students who elect to complete a focused scholarly project must earn 3 hours of NURS 595 applicable to the credit hours required.
